When Demetrius learned of these developments, he was greatly distressed, and he said, ²³ “How did we allow Alexander to get ahead of us in gaining the friendship of the Jews and thus strengthening his position? ²⁴ I too will write to them in conciliatory terms and offer them honors and gifts as an inducement to support me.”
